Why choose this book

Choose this for a reader who likes sharp comedy, unfair adults receiving consequences, and a capable child driving the story. The school setting is familiar, but Matilda’s intelligence and developing power give the plot the scale of a wish-fulfilment adventure.

Reading it together

The chapters are manageable for developing readers, although Dahl’s cruel adults, comic punishments, and exaggerated threats can feel darker than the playful cover suggests. Reading the first chapters together helps establish that the nastiness is deliberately larger than life.
